For flying a drone in Singapore there are certain rules provided by the CAAS, (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore)

Melvin Wong, the CAAS head of UAS at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College Central stated that “Over the past four years with the help of technological development in UA and provided with its growing popularity, we realized it was timely to review and increase the current regulatory framework.”

Below listed are some of the rules for flying drones in Singapore,

  No permission is needed to fly a drone that weighs 7 kilograms (15 pounds) or less that is being flown 200 feet or below. In case of flying a drone that weighs more than 7 kilograms (15 pounds) or above 60 meters (200 feet), permission is mandatory.

  Drones are not permitted to fly over crowds or people.

  Drones must not fly within the specified distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) of an airport.

  Drones can fly only during daylight hours.

  Drone pilots should keep a visual line of sight with their drone at all times.

The Senior Minister of State for Transport and Health, Lam Pin Min, in the Parliament also stated CAAS plans to improve a system to analyse unmanned aircraft. It will permit CAAS to find if individual drones are functioning under the right permit, and issue alerts to pilots who fall foul of these laws.

The Republic of Singapore Air Force possesses various weapons at its disposal, including a jammer gun, that produces signals that can jam the control signals of drones. They also have a drone catcher system, that contains a net to catch them.

Permit Requirements to Fly Drones in Singapore

Singapore needs drone pilots to acquire a permit to fly under any of these given rules:

  • Flights that are above 200 feet
  • Flights in restricted airspace
  • Commercial flights
